ELIZA MARCH TELLS ALL HER EROTIC SECRETS!
Why did you begin writing erotic romances?
My writing is hot because I like to read sizzling titillating sex scenes without a lot of euphemisms (Sorry, you’ll see this word used again in a different context below - so don’t freak out that it’s my new favorite word of the day) I used to read tame romance, and as it got hotter I discovered I enjoyed it more. My writing style took on the same pattern, always picking up steam.
Honestly, I’m trying to get an agent or publisher interested in my ability to write across a wide range of genres. Erotica is open to all the genres I like to write, and I get to be explicit. I also write paranormal romance and romantic suspense and those books are less about the sex and more about the character driven plots.
The pat answer I always hear from authors is... “the one I’m working with now” but that’s not entirely true. I have a Cajun police detective working a serial case in New Orleans in one book. I’m crazy in love with him. He’s got the slow sing-song accent, the dark handsome looks, cocky–in-your-face attitude, and a great sense of humor. Oh, and can he dance! He’s not even the hero...which makes him available. Because he hasn’t found his certain someone or his book yet, he’s all mine and the reader’s. I think I’m savoring him while I can. Once he gets his own book, he’ll get the girl and the happily ever after...until then...heh, heh, heh, he’s mine to do with as I please. Mmm.
(So now you see how I’ve answered your first question here with a little more honesty.)
Where do you come up with your characters?
My answer is always the same -- ‘My characters act out their story.’ and for the most part that’s true. I’ve never cast spells (though sometimes I wish I could) like Candace in ‘Witch of Air and Fire’ or had a ménage with two wizards (though sometimes I wish I could – LOL) I’ve never shape-shifted either (though sometimes ... ah, you know the drill) like my characters in ‘The Lion, The Leopard, and The Wolf’ or had a ménage with two Were-beasts (though...there was that one time I wondered if...Oh! Never mind. I was drifting.) but I do write like Ailsa, and I could very well have had that wild Hot Highland Fling if given the opportunity.
Self-practiced? I’ve never blown up a boat although a character in one of my books has – sex is no different. Okay, okay -- I will admit to one thing. I’m not a virgin. Now that’s my story and I’m sticking to it!
Any advice to newbies?
Do your homework. Ah, not like that!
Join a writer’s group who offer critiques. It might help if the genre is comparable to the one you write. My first writer’s group was a retired group of seniors; some had been in the clergy. One was a nun, another a newspaper columnist, a screenwriter, a poet, nuclear sub captain and an FBI guy. What an interesting group of people, but I can’t tell you how difficult it was to stand up and read my stuff out loud in front of the nun who kept fanning herself and moaning.
Seriously, find a group you respect and who can also respect what you write.
Read the publishers’ submission guidelines. The first thing I had accepted I wrote for “a call for submissions.” Find out what they want and write it.
If you already have a manuscript fitting the guidelines, then send it in. You can’t get published if your manuscript stays ‘under the bed’ that’s a euphemism for not sending it out electronically in this day and age.
What do you have coming up next?
I’ve been having more than a ménage with several Gods of Atlantis. The hunky guys are trying to get back their emotions. The one keep-saking them doesn’t fit the prophesized description. But despite that, they feel connected to this woman. While catering to her every need, they discover she’s the ‘One.’ When they start ‘feeling’ emotions, something they haven’t experienced in over four thousand years, things get interesting. The whole time they’re worried about getting back their ability to care, ironically, the heroine is worried about being a little older than these guys. Little does she know...
